Born and raised in Germany, trained in New York City and now based in Canada, jazz pianist and composer, Florian Hoefner, draws from a myriad of influences that cumulate in his unique brand of modern jazz. Praised as a “composer-bandleader of insightful resolve” by the New York Times and a “harmonically daring pianist […] reaching toward new sonic territory” by Downbeat, Florian Hoefner has made his mark as an inventive creator and performer of exciting contemporary Jazz.

With the Florian Hoefner Group, he has released 3 albums on Origin Records that have received rave reviews around the globe. “Luminosity,” his latest release, has been described as a “starkly picturesque album [...] that makes profound statements from quiet moments” by Downbeat, as “the real deal” by Jazz Journal (UK) and as a “total experience” by the New York Jazz Record. Featuring tenor saxophonist Seamus Blake, this record has been his most ambitious project so far. It has been nominated as Jazz Recording of the Year at the East Coast Music Awards 2017. With the quartet, he maintains a busy touring schedule that has included over 100 performances in Europe and North America to date. After their performance at the Montréal Jazz Festival 2015, Hoefner was awarded the Stingray Rising Star Award.

In September 2017 he released “Coldwater Stories” (Origin Records), his first ever solo piano album with 10 original compositions and improvisations. Exploring a new process that interleaves composed with freely improvised sections it has been described as “sublimely evocative music” by The WholeNote Magazine.

As a member of the Germany-based collective, Subtone, he has released 4 critically acclaimed albums on labels including ENJA Records and performed on 4 continents including festivals such as Jazz Baltica (Germany), ACACIA Jazz Festival (Ethiopia), Jazz in Situ (Ecuador) and Tremplin Jazz d’Avignon (France) where the group was awarded the jury and audience awards. Florian’s work as a sideman has led to numerous additional CD releases including a collaboration with guitarist, Kurt Rosenwinkel on Fresh Sounds Records. He has shared the stage with the likes of Joe Lovano, Seamus Blake, Rich Perry, John Riley, trumpet virtuoso Jens Lindemann, and New York Philharmonic clarinetist, Mark Nuccio.

A two-time winner of the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award, Hoefner’s compositions and arrangements can be heard on many commercial albums by artists including Till Brönner, Jasmin Tabatabai and Peter Fessler. His big band compositions have been performed by the New York Jazz Orchestra, the Lucerne Jazz Orchestra, the German Youth Jazz Orchestra and the DanJam Orchestra.

Florian initially began his musical studies in Bavaria, where he played the trumpet and accordion, in addition to piano. After obtaining his first degree in jazz piano from the University of Arts in Berlin, he was granted a Fulbright Scholarship to complete a Master of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City where he studied with Jason Moran, Dave Liebman, and Garry Dial.

Since July 2014 Florian is a resident of St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, where he now serves as adjunct professor for Jazz at Memorial University.

Hoefner's tunes are seamlessly intertwined, as is his band's performance. Luminosity is a total experience. The entire band [...] performs as if joined at the hip, as if they all wrote the compositions, not Hoefner alone. Composed while on sabbatical in Newfoundland, Luminosity plays out like a suite, so flawless is the material. The fabric of each composition relies on complex chordal and rhythmic motifs but, as the album speeds by, one is only caught up in the sound of the music, grace of the piano, swells and surges of the rhythm section and swirling tenor. [...] Far from a collection of tunes with separate meanings and musical messages, Luminosity is a complete work, so unified one forgets where one track ends and the next begins. It is the essence of flow, as clear as a stream rushing by and equally invigorating.Ken MicallefNew York City Jazz Record

Florian Hoefner is a cerebral and harmonically daring pianist whose style crystallizes around jazz and blues fundamentals, but whose adventurous spirit finds him reaching toward new sonic territory. Luminosity, his starkly picturesque new album, makes profound statements from quiet moments. [...] There is serious density to this music. Prepare to explore it on end.Brian ZimmermanDownbeat

The songs of Coldwater Stories by pianist Florian Hoefner seem to run one into the other, and despite the sometimes pronounced silences which form part of the music, the sound is continuous. This is just like the icy waters of the Atlantic Sea off the coast of Newfoundland, “tumbling in harness,” as Dylan Thomas once said singing from the Welsh coast. Wearing his profoundly lyrical skin comfortably, Hoefner’s own poetry can also be chameleonic as he invents new harmonies and chords that are tantamount to reinventing tonality itself, as in Iceberg 1 and Iceberg 2.

There, as elsewhere on his Coldwater Stories, the pianist begins to explore a compositional/improvisational process that avoids conventional thematic development, instead moving its material through constantly-shifting harmonic backgrounds – impression seeming to matter more than direction. A great example of this celebrated vagueness is heard in the sophistication of The Way of Water. Meanwhile, Sunrise Bay is sublimely evocative music and is at times played at such perfect pianissimo that it comes closest to being hammerless piano.

But Hoefner never completely renounces traditional tonality and form, even as he cultivates an utterly contemporary pianistic persona. His songs – for they are such works – The Great Auk and Green Gardens are shimmering and seductive and come from the moment of reconciliation. Hoefner is in his element here, revelling in the opulence of new songs of the sea, performed on the piano in all of its orchestral sonorities.Raul da GamaWholeNote Magazine

Whether maneuvering through the turbulent grooves of "In Circles" or elegant yet dramatic movement of "The Narrows" these players bring and give it their all.

Two tracks typify Hoefner's mellifluous writing. "Newfound Jig" was inspired by traditional Irish music that the pianist has performed on accordion whereas "Reminiscence" moves with a graceful flow and a contagious hook. Both pieces exhibit themes with dance-like qualities and Hoefner's acumen as a composer and a stunning performer. The release sparkles with ideas of thoughtful introspection and kinetic energy much like the scenic backdrops of Canada's largest island.Mark F. TurnerAll About Jazz

German-born pianist Florian Hoefner's third release as a leader, Luminosity (Origin Records), reveals a thoughtful composer who revels in finding original ways of getting from point A to point B and beyond. Luminosity is an excellent release. World-class playing on all accounts makes Hoefner's already solid compositions sound even stronger, and the large variety between tracks gives the record great replay value. Without a doubt, Canada has gained a great asset to its jazz scene through this pianist's move to our East Coast.Chris MaskellOttawa Citizen

FLORIAN HOEFNER GROUP/Falling Up: A right on set of modern piano jazz is on tap here by this German born cat and his New York pals. Playing with the kind of effortlessness that makes everyone think that he can do it just as easily and just as well, it's the sign of a real master when he leaves them in his dust and doesn't make a big deal out of it. You can bet Hoefner would leave a big cloud and a lot of silence in his wake. Tasty, dazzling stuff that hits all the right notes, this is sitting down jazz that swings too much to leave you in your seat not doing anything but nodding your head. Well done.Chris SpectorMidwest Record

Sarah SeidelNDR

Seit dem Stipendium 2008 lebt Florian Höfner in New York. Uli LemkeJazzthing
